Samantha Maloney is an American musician. She is best known for playing in the band Hole and Mötley Crüe. She has also performed live with the rock band Eagles of Death Metal and musician Peaches.
Maloney received her first drum kit at five. Drumming instantly became a significant part of her life. At fourteen she attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City, and for the next three years studied percussion largely.
Music Career
At sixteen, she auditioned for the post-hardcore band Shift as a replacement drummer, and the band gave her the position permanently.
While playing in Shift, she came through on her school’s basketball team. In 1993, had to decide whether to pursue a serious basketball career with college scholarship offers or to continue drumming in her band Shift.
She stuck with Shift from 1993 to 1998, who released two records on Equal Vision Records in 1994 and 1995. In 1997, Shift signed to Columbia Records and made their major-label debut album, Get In. After the album’s release, the band toured.
The rock band Hole offered Maloney an audition in Los Angeles for the role of drummer, a position given up by Patty Schemel. With her audition a success, the band accepted her and so officially joined up with Hole. She left Shift behind to join the band.
At 22, Maloney was on the road with Hole at the height of their popularity, touring largely in several continents. In 2008, Maloney guest-starred on three episodes of the series Californication. She played the part of Maureen Tucker in George Hickenlooper’s 2006 film Factory Girl.
